This week Sandbach Nub News is getting up close with Daniel Dodd, the manager of the Co-op Food store at The Hill in Sandbach.

While many people will have certain ideas of what it means to be a store manager, at the Co-op it comes with an opportunity to make a real difference in the local community.

Daniel told us about his background, why he decided to join the Co-op and what his favourite part of the role is.

Background

"I was born in Crewe and moved to Sandbach with my girlfriend when we bought our first home in 2017.

"I'm currently doing a law degree alongside working for the Co-op and my hobbies include playing golf, watching American football and, after being inspired from watching The Queen's Gambit, learning how to play chess."

Why the Co-op?

Daniel wanted to work for an organisation that looked after its colleagues as well as the communities they operate in.

"After being asked to go in for an interview, I did some research on the Co-op and was amazed at how much they do to help people out.

"The Co-op Membership was just launching at the time and I just loved the idea. When I saw how local causes benefited from Membership, I knew I had made the right choice in coming to work for the Co-op."

Best part of the role

While a store manager's role is undoubtedly a challenging one at times, Daniel said the community that has been built between colleagues and customers is one of the most rewarding aspects.

When asked what the best part of the role had been for him, he replied: "It would be hard to pick just one, but during this pandemic it's been so lovely seeing colleagues and customers in this community come together as one.

"Whether it's doorstep deliveries for our vulnerable customers, the regulars coming in for a chat in the morning or colleagues being there to support each other through the challenging times.

"Having the opportunity to get out in the community and give back is great as well. Whether it's going to paint the local church or clear weeds out of a residential home's garden," he said.

"It has all made me feel proud."

When Co-op Members buy own-brand products and services, 2p for every £1 spent goes to support local causes and community organisations. To find out more about Membership, follow the link here coop.co.uk/membership
