Staying cool: our motors partner, Swansway, gives top tips for navigating UK heatwaves
When the British summer finally arrives, we usually celebrate, until the thermometer hits that uncomfortable mid-twenties mark.
Because our homes, cars and infrastructure are famously designed to trap heat, staying cool requires a bit more strategy than just opening a window.
In fact, some of our most common cooling habits can actually make things worse. Here is how to keep your home, your pets and your travel plans chilled when the sun is at its peak.
1. The "Mediterranean" Window Strategy
The instinct to open all windows as soon as it gets hot is often counterproductive. If the air outside is warmer than the air inside, you are simply inviting the heat in.
The Fix: Keep windows and curtains closed on the sunny side of the house during the day. Only open them in the evening once the outside temperature has dropped below your indoor temperature to create a, "cross breeze."
2. Hydration Beyond Water
While drinking water is vital, you can also "eat" your hydration. Foods with high water content help regulate your body temperature more effectively during a heatwave.
The Fix: Reach for watermelon (92% water), cucumbers, and strawberries. Surprisingly, sipping a warm drink can also help; it triggers your body's sweat response, which cools you down faster than a cold drink, provided the humidity isn't too high.
3. Don't Forget the "Vulnerable" Family Members
Our pets feel the heat much more intensely than we do. Pavement temperatures can climb high enough to burn paws in seconds and since dogs don't sweat like humans, they rely entirely on panting and cool surfaces to regulate their heat.
The Fix: Test the pavement with the back of your hand; if you can't hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot for a walk. Keep a damp towel for them to lie on in the shade.
4. Navigating the "Mobile Greenhouse"
Your car is essentially a glass box that traps solar radiation. After just 20 minutes in the sun, the interior temperature can be significantly higher than the outside air. Relying on a struggling air conditioning unit not only makes for an uncomfortable journey but also puts a massive strain on your engine and fuel consumption.
If you notice your car takes a long time to cool down, or if there's a slightly musty smell when you turn the vents on, your system's refrigerant gas likely needs replenishing.
Beat the Humidity: Don't wait for a record breaking day to discover your vents are blowing warm air; a quick air conditioning service ensures you stay comfortable on every journey and keeps your system running efficiently.
