The tenants of a centuries-old pub just a stone's throw from Sandbach's famous historic Crosses are getting ready to pull their final pint.

Sadly Callum and Mel at the town's Lower Chequer are calling it a day in January and moving on to pastures new.

Now the brewery, Joule's, is advertising for a new tenant for the popular pub, said to be the oldest building in Sandbach dating back to 1570.

And it has revealed that the pub will be closing at date to be revealed in January 2022 for a small refurbishment and reopening in February with new tenants.

The pub is also getting an upgrade of a plug and play music system, removing the need for lugging about kit and long sound checks.

History has it that the 'chequered board' was used to help educate customers to count their money, and the old landlords of the pub were the money lenders to the locals.

An ancient horseshoe is nailed to the bar, a luck link than spans 400 years. The pub was one of Cheshire's best known coaching inns on the main route from Manchester to London.

Callum and Mel said: "Thank you so much for all the lovely texts, support and encouragement from our lovely customers."

Joule's is currently looking for new tenants to take over to carry on from all the hard work of Callum and Mel.

Rachel Hackett, franchise support manager said: "Whether you're an experienced operator or someone looking to start out with their first tenancy, there's a deal to suit you.

"If you want to take your first steps in running a pub then find out more about Joule's Darwin agreement, a one year deal where Joule's will support you on your new journey from manager to tenant."

If you are interested in running the Lower Chequer you can call Rachel at Joule's Brewery on 01630 654 400.
