Passengers arriving at Sandbach station are not only greeted by cheerful artwork and plants – they also have a Chinese welcome!

For the Friends of Sandbach Station (FOSS), has chosen to celebrate the Lunar New Year, China's most important festival, which started on Sunday, with rail goers.

FOSS has put a colourful New Year poster up in its display board on platform one at the station in Elworth.

The work is the brainchild of FOSS' publicity officer, Yvonne Lam, originally from Hong Kong but has lived and worked in Sandbach for more than two years.

Yvonne has kindly translated her work.

Originally from Hong Kong, Yvonne loves Sandbach and has made the town her home.

"The four letters on the right mean making progress in the year to come while the four letters on left mean safety – getting out and coming back, in other words travelling safely," she said.

"Both are common phrases for the lunar New Year. The British say "Merry Christmas" in the festive season and both are related to moving and safety so what better thing for passengers?"

Yvonne added: "Sandbach is a small town but with residents of different cultural backgrounds, I posted this to show that FOSS respects and cares for every member of the community.

"In the past, we posted drawings from Afghan refugees and have shown support to Ukrainians. I also posted the word "Sandbach" in different languages."

John Scarrott, chair of FOSS said: "Yvonne is a much-valued member of our team and is excellent at getting our message across.

"It's such a lovely message for passengers, giving them a warm welcome to our wonderful town."

FOSS regularly refreshes the notice board and is looking for future suggestions of what to feature in the future.
