A Sandbach artist has found picking up his brush or pencil and delving into his latest work of art is paying big dividends with his health.

Art is known to help with mental wellbeing and talented James Anderson Rogers has found his creative talents are just the thing to help with his life.

The 45-year-old was diagnosed with dyspraxia as a youngster and in later life was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

But James has found that getting out and painting takes his mind off any health issues.

The talented artist specialises in oil painting, graphite drawing and plein air – painting outdoors.

"I love getting outside and painting what's out there. I sometimes paint in the rain and snow," he said.

"I paint locally but I love going to the Peak District and painting there. I park up, get my easel and paints out and start painting."

James studied natural history illustration at college in Bournemouth but apart from that, is self-taught.

"I paint standing up as it's easier for me. I find painting very relaxing," says James, who prefers to work in oil.

"Water colours are more difficult  and I have used acrylics."

James has painted views in Sandbach Park and eagle-eyed visitors may have spotted him at the town's recent Wakes funfair.

"I painted at the fair a couple of years ago and wanted to give it another try," said James. "It worked really well this year and I'm pleased with the result.

James also works on commissions as well as doing portrait and pencil sketches, including one young cyclocross and mountain bike racer, Xander Graham (pictured below).

One day, James would like to see his work in local galleries and he is currently looking at getting some of his work made into prints.

For the time being though, the studio of his Ettiley Heath home in Elton Road remains his gallery showcase along with his Facebook page here and Instagram account here
