Members of the award-winning Sandbach-based Saxon Players are getting ready to stage their next production.

The theatrical group's Jon Beagles won Best Individual Performance at this year's Wilmslow One Act Play Festival.

The year before, Jo Sutton won the same accolade for her portrayal of her own great-grandmother in Hannah's Left Hook.

Now the cast is getting ready to stage The Frogs, probably the best-known Greek comedy.

The play centres around the god Dionysus who, convinced that all the best writers are dead, travels to the underworld to bring Euripides back to the living.

"It is very funny, very rude, and has a surprising number of parallels with modern life," said a spokesperson for the Saxon Players.

In this specially adapted version, the play starts with Dionysus, along with his much smarter slave, Xanthias, visiting his half-brother, Hercules, for a few tips on how to get to the underworld.

Dionysus makes the mistake of thinking that by disguising himself as the mighty Hercules, he will instil fear and respect in everyone he meets.

The reality is that Hercules has quite a few enemies in the underworld, and they are out for revenge.

Eventually, Dionysus finds himself having to judge which of the dead writers best deserves to have another go at life. Think of it as Hades Got Talent.

Saxon Players will be performing The Frogs from September 28th - 30th at Sandbach Masonic Hall. Tickets are available here
