A Sandbach bowling club whose origins date back nearly 70 years is appealing for new members and people to join the committee.

Marriott House Veterans Bowling Club is based at the upper green in Sandbach Park in the town centre.

The club meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons on the top green and currently has around 38 members ranging from aged 60 to 93.

But captain, Jackie Timmins, and secretary, Tricia Bayne, want to see more people join the club and take up bowling.

The club's roots date back to 1956 when the club was formed by a Sandbach businesswoman.

Its captain, Jackie, said: "It's such a great thing to get into and is so social. We're a happy club and it's easy to make friends.

"We organise matches and cups as well as social events. We'd really like to see new members coming forward.

"Bowling is so good for you. Being out in the fresh air and being surrounded by friends is a great way to socialise."

Secretary, Tricia Bayne, has already enjoyed sport, playing hockey, tennis and squash in her youth.

She wanted to go back to sport and joined the club around two years ago.

"I'd never really bowled before but I love it. It's far more than rolling a ball. It's such great fun."

Membership costs £60 per year which works out at £5 a month.

Anyone interested in joining should ring Jackie on 07748 567735 after 7 pm.
