This Friday (September 6th) is National Food Bank Day and a local Food Bank is appealing for residents to support the day with donations.

Sandbach Food Bank works under the umbrella of Unity Methodist Church at the Wesley Centre in Sandbach.

The Food Bank, which began in 2013, operates for short-term emergency help and the Sandbach Pantry, also based at Wesley Centre, is there for longer term help for people.

A spokesperson said: "Here in Sandbach the purpose of the Food Bank is to provide free, emergency, food aid to local people who are in severe financial difficulties.

"These families, single people or couples, come to us through a recognised referral agency, such as schools with families in the CW11 area, Housing Associations, Child Support Services, Mental Health Services, Citizen's Advice Bureau, The Probation Service, GP practices and Health Visitors.

"A maximum of 4 parcels in any six-month period is provided to cover short term need to anyone in the CW11 postcode area.

"We aim to supply sufficient non-perishable food items and essential toiletries to cover at least three days, provided in one parcel.

"We rely entirely on the kind and generous support of Sandbach residents, community organisations and grants from local and government schemes to enable this vital provision to those most in need among us to continue."

And say Sandbach Food Bank, the need has never been greater with demand increasing. They say in a typical month the Food Bank receives 40 referrals, covering up to 100 individuals, including over 40 children.

"This is a 25% increase compared to a year ago. We really need your help as we are struggling to meet the demands made upon us.," they say.

Sandbach Food Bank says there are two ways you can help:

Donations by cash or bank transfer can be made - www.unitymethodistchurchsandbach.org/foodbank or email us [email protected] for details.

"We use the money to buy food and toiletries when we have insufficient donated items available." they say.
