Members of Sandbach Justice and Peace group gathered next to Sandbach's historic Crosses to hold a vigil to mark the COP26 summit currently taking place in Glasgow.

Passers-by in Sandbach town centre were given paper boats at Saturday's vigil to highlight the event the theme of the event – "We are all in the same storm but we're not in the same boat".

And some of the boats, made at Sandbach Baptist Church, are now set to be delivered to the COP26 conference in Glasgow where world leaders are meeting for a summit on climate change.

Sandbach Justice and Peace group, open to all churches in the town, pointed out at their vigil that poorer people will suffer the worst from climate change.as the serious effects of climate change like hurricanes, floods, wildfires and rise in sea levels, driving people from their homes and increasing refugee numbers.

Retired headteacher and spokesperson for the group, Mark Thompson said: "It won't affect me but it will my grandchildren and their children. We're doing this for their future in the hope we can change things.

"Our aim at the vigil was to provide information about climate change and for people to take a boat which represents the hope that humanity will rise to the moment and use this year to set sail towards a more just future.

"Climate change is not just about world leaders getting together to find the solution.

We are all part of the solution even though it may just be small part.

"We can sit back and shrug our shoulders saying that it's not a problem as we won't be around but what about our grandchildren and future generations?

"We should want to preserve our world for them. There are lots of things we can do,

including: reducing our use of single use plastic such as toothbrushes, pencils, plastic food wrap, takeaway coffee cups, plastic bags and bottles."
