Sandbach Justice and Peace group is holding a vigil in Sandbach town centre tomorrow (Saturday) to mark the COP26 summit currently taking place in Glasgow.

The theme "We are all in the same storm … we are not all in the same boat!" recognises that poorer countries and poorer people will suffer the worst from climate change.

The group, part of the Unity Methodist Church, say the serious effects of climate change like hurricanes, floods, wildfires and rise in sea levels will drive many people from their homes and increase refugee numbers.

Information about climate change will be on display during the vigil and people will be invited to make paper boats to represent the hope that humanity will rise to the moment and use this year to set sail towards a more just future.

The vigil takes place from 12 noon until 1pm beside the town's famous Crosses on the Cobbles.

Mark Thompson, spokesperson for the group said: "Climate change is not just about world leaders getting together to find the solution.

"We are all part of the solution even though it may just be small part. We can sit back and shrug our shoulders saying that it's not a problem as we won't be around but what about our grandchildren and future generations?

"We should want to preserve our world for them. There are lots of things we can do, including: reducing our use of single use plastic such as toothbrushes, pencils, plastic food wrap, takeaway coffee cups, plastic bags and bottles.

"The list goes on, but there are sustainable alternatives for all

these things like reducing meat consumption. Start by having at least one meat free day a week or cutting it out altogether.

"Buy second hand items rather than new, get appliances repaired, cycle or

walk rather than driving or getting on the bus, travel less by air, switch your electric supply to sustainable energy," said Mark.

"It might feel like it's too hard, but think of the alternative. Start small but build up over time. We felt the pain with the move to reusable shopping bags but now it's second nature.
