Wilmslow councillor Michael Gorman takes up his new post as deputy leader of Cheshire East Council today.

Cllr Gorman (Ind,) who was elected to the council last May, takes over from former Independent group leader Craig Browne.

Cllr Browne has stepped down to become chief executive at Citizen's Advice North Staffordshire, although he will continue as ward councillor for Alderley Edge.

Cllr Gorman was elected to the post of deputy leader at Tuesday's full meeting of the council.

He has a background in print and media industries and was latterly employed as a senior academic at Manchester Metropolitan University.

In proposing him for the role, Cllr Browne said: "Michael has a master's degree in training and development from the University of Sheffield and, more recently, a postgraduate diploma in special educational needs, reflecting his interest and concern in this area and informing his current role as a special needs governor at a local primary school in Wilmslow.

"Michael is a strong advocate for the third sector and has both been and is a board member of several charities."

Cheshire East Council said in a statement: "At a meeting of full council on Tuesday 27 February, members elected Councillor Michael Gorman as deputy leader of the Council. Councillor Gorman represents Wilmslow West and Chorley and has recently been elected as leader of the independent group. He has most recently also served as vice-chair of finance sub committee."
