Cheshire East is set to discuss plans for a new Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority (Nub News).

Cheshire East will decide tomorrow whether to back plans for a proposed devolution deal which council leaders say will bring huge financial benefits to the area.

The council is holding an extraordinary meeting at Tatton Park where members will be asked to approve plans for a proposed new Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority complete with elected mayor.

Similar meetings have already taken place at Warrington Borough Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council, where elected members backed the proposal.

Cheshire West's cabinet has since approved the creation of a new combined authority and Warrington's cabinet is expected to sign it off next week.

Once set up, the new authority would be separate from Cheshire West, Cheshire East and Warrington Borough councils – which would all retain their independence, finances, and councillors.

It would have an elected mayor.

The public vote for the mayor was initially expected to take place next May when the new authority, if approved, will be set up, but the mayoral vote will now not take place until May 2027, when the council elections will be held.

The new mayor would have influence over matters such as strategic transport decisions, skills, economic development and housing.

The extraordinary meeting of the council takes place on Wednesday (September 17) at Tatton Park at 2pm.
