Cheshire's police commissioner will get £195,000 from the government to support victims affected by the prisoner early release programme.

Commissioner Dan Price said over the last decade, the population of the country had grown by more than 10 per cent but the prison capacity grew by only half a per cent.

"This is at the core of the challenge that we are facing in the criminal justice system, and it's why I am so supportive of the government's planned investment in increasing the prison capacity," he said.

"The government has introduced a progression model, that is a new structured approach to releasing prisoners, ultimately making sure the criminal justice system works."

He said police and crime commissioners (PCCs) were being given £195,000 'to help victims feel safe, informed, and crucially supported'.

"PCCs have been expected to have some support in place by the October 1, and we've submitted our ideas to the Ministry of Justice on how we would use this money here in Cheshire, and to deliver the support," said Mr Price.

"We will work in partnership with local services, the criminal justice agencies, including probation, and neighbouring PCCs as appropriate to provide as best a joined-up response as we can for victims."

Speaking after the meeting a spokesperson for the commissioner's office said every PCC in the country would get the funding over three years.

She said it was early days as to what the funding would be spent on in Cheshire, but the office would be doing research to find out the concerns of victims.

Funding towards the Hollie Guard safety app was also a possibility.
