Clever children carve out success in their nursery's Halloween pumpkin patch

By Deborah Bowyer 1st Nov 2021

Clever children put their artistic talents to the test when a children's nursery turned its front play area into a pumpkin patch for Halloween.

Children at Kids Corner Private Day Nursery in Sandbach took part in a pumpkin competition to home in on their creative flair and fine motor skills.

The children were invited to try out their pumpkin carving skills at home with their families and then bring them into nursery and place them in the pumpkin patch.

And the results were astounding with everything from a dinosaur pumpkin to a Cinderella themed carriage one complete with silver sparkles and silver paint.

Mayor of Sandbach Councillor Geraint Price Jones and his consort Christina Price Jones went along to the Congleton Road nursery to judge.

Cllr Price Jones, whose own children went to the popular nursery said: "All the entries were fabulous and show some amazing talent.

"It was very hard to choose between all the entries. All of them had a little bit of something different and they were all amazing in their own way."

First place went to Oliver, second to Willow and third place to Rory.

Nursery Manager, Lizzie Arden, said she was proud of all the entries and thanked all the children who had taken part.

She said: "It's the first year we've done it and we'll certainly be repeating it.

"It's been a huge success and the children have had so much fun taking part. I am so proud of all the children.

It's not just fine motor skills which has used but also expressive arts and design as well as personal, social and emotional development.

"They have thoroughly enjoyed doing this and learnt so much along with the other autumn activities we've been doing."

Besides learning about pumpkins, the children have also been doing

leaf painting, messy play with pumpkins and painting ghosts.
