Campaigners fighting plans for more oil production in the North Sea gathered on the ancient Cobbles in the centre of Sandbach to make their points clear.

They say the recent heat waves have shown that climate change is happening and is already affecting the weather in Sandbach.

As well as urging people to sign a petition asking PM Andy Burnham not to grant approval for more oil production from the Rosebank oil field they also called on people to back a plea to ask Cheshire East Council to speed up action to become carbon neutral by 2030.

And they are calling on call on the government not to grant approval of the Rosebank oil field and urge Cheshire East Council to speed up action to meet its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.

"Unless urgent action is taken then extreme weather events will become more frequent and we could see catastrophic climate change," said a spokesperson previously.

"If the Gulf Stream weakens or stops, then British summers will become hotter and winters will become colder.

"Who would have thought a few years ago that we would be praying for rain in Sandbach, but the dry spell this summer showed how dependent we are on the weather?"
