An angry Sandbach town councillor has written to the management at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club after complaints about football supporters.

Cllr Ann Nevitt, who became a Town Ward councillor in October, wants to see what action can be taken to stop rowdy football fans taking pit-stops in the town.

The quaint market town of Sandbach with its cobbled square and many pubs is a magnet for fans as it is just minutes from junction 17 of the M6 – and an ideal stop.

Cllr Nevitt says people visiting the town's Makers Market on Saturday were driven to leave due to unacceptable behaviour from football fans.

Cllr Nevitt told Sandbach Nub News: "These football supporters from Sheffield came into the town.

"They were shouting and swearing and abusing the shop keepers, so much so that people were leaving the market.

"A couple of shop keepers complained and were just met with abuse. I don't see why we have to put up with this when parents are out with their children and people are trying to make a living.

"There seems to be many people though who do not seem to mind the bad language and the shouting yet we have people complaining on a frequent basis about the anti- social behaviour of the youth of our town."

One shopkeeper said on social media: "Sheffield Wednesday fans with appalling language shouting and swearing outside my shop this morning.

"They then decided it's OK to stand under the canopy and blocking the entrance whilst chanting abusive football songs at passers-by.

"Not a happy shop owner!! All this going on whilst families try to enjoy the Makers Market."
