Crowds gather for special centenary celebration of Sandbach's War Memorial

By Deborah Bowyer 18th Apr 2022

Veterans, dignitaries and Royal British Legion supporters gathered together for a rededication service for Sandbach's War Memorial.

It's a 100 years since the important feature on The Cobbles was dedicated to the town and all those who have served for Queen and country.

Crowds gathered to take part in the service at 3pm on April 16th – the exact time of the original service.

The service was led by the Rev Bee Boyde and Marjorie Newton, chair of the Royal British Legion's Sandbach branch.

Musical accompaniment was provided by Rob Glastonbury on the accordion and Alexandra Newton on the flute.

A wreath was laid at the end of the service to commemorate the Falklands War in 1982 and the Last Post was played by Sandbach School pupil, Callum Rayner.

The service followed the same format as the one held a 100 years' ago.

Majorie Newton told Sandbach Nub News: "The War Memorial is the centrepiece to all our ceremonies so this was an important event."
