Middlewich residents will learn next week whether they will go to the polls in June to vote for a new councillor.

Gareth Williams resigned from the town council at the end of March saying having a pressurised job is incompatible with being a councillor.

A by-election will be held on June 16 if the election is contested.

The make-up of Middlewich Town Council is very different to that originally elected in the all-out election in 2019.

Mr Williams was the fifth councillor to resign within a seven month period.

His resignation came within weeks of Dr Peter Hirst and Pauline Hickey quitting the council in February.

In October 2021 David Latham resigned and the previous month Chris Jones quit.

Anyone interested in standing for election to Middlewich Town Council to represent the Kinderton ward must submit their nomination papers by 4pm Wednesday May 18 to the returning officer at Macclesfield Town Hall.

Nomination papers must be hand delivered and prospective candidates must call 01270 685922 to make an appointment to deliver the papers.

If the election is contested the poll will take place on Thursday June 16 between 7am and 10pm.
