Stepping back in time: Verdin Grammar alumni to relive cherished school memories at historic reunion

Two former pupils of a well-known former grammar school are busy adding the finishing touches to a reunion which will see people attending from all over the country and possibly further afield.
Sandbach residents, Colin Pierpoint and Stephen Oakes, are part of a committee set up to organise Winsford Verdin Grammar School reunion taking place at the end of this month (March).

And the event will bring back happy memories for both Colin, who lives in Wheelock and Stephen from Offley Avenue, Sandbach who both went on to have successful careers after their stint at the local grammar school.

Colin grew up in Middlewich and remembers school trips to the Lake District where he developed his love of hill and mountain climbing. The two are part of a committee set up to organise the big reunion.

He said: "It was a great school and we have lots of good memories. I got involved in the walking and climbing and even to this day still have a love of both."
Colin went on to pursue a successful career in the BBC as an engineer and lecturer while Stephen went on to accountancy at ICL after leaving school the school which changed from a grammar school in 1970.
"I played a lot of sport and did cricket and cross country," Stephen said. "l also remember swimming outside in the brine baths. It was freezing cold sometimes!

"We've got a former teacher coming to the event who must now be in his 80s. It will be interesting to talk to people and share memories."
Colin set up a Facebook group for the school which now has over 600 members, some of whom are coming to the reunion on Saturday, March 29th at Meadowbank Social Club in Winsford.

The event will feature music from the era when the ex pupils were at the school such as Motown, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones as well as a display of the uniform which included a cap.
"We'll also be having a revolving slide show showing photos from our school days and other memories at the event. Tickets are £15 each to attend and any money left over will be donated to St Luke's Hospice," said Stephen.

Colin added: "I am the founder and admin for the Facebook group for ex-pupils' memories. They wanted a reunion and so I set up a committee.
"We're all looking forward to it and would love to hear from any ex pupils who attend the school when it was a grammar school which was up to 1970."
