A Sandbach woman has unearthed a piece of the town's history while renovating the 1950s house she shares with her husband and children.

Professional photographer, Lisa Sumner, found two copies of an advert wedged behind a bathroom mirror at the house in Elworth Road, Elworth.

Years ago, the house was Trough Hardware Stores and now the Sumner family are trying to find out more details about the hardware store.

Many of the houses were occupied by workers from Foden's Trucks, a major employer in the town.

Lisa said: "My dad is renovating the bathroom. When he took a mirror down he found these two pieces of paper to stop the mirror it wobbling.

"We'd love to find out more about Trough Hardware Stores. We have some photos of the outside at Christmas time but that's all. I'd love to know more about our home's history."

Lisa and her family moved into the house several years ago and are slowly renovating it.

"People talked about it being a bit of an Aladdin's cave where you could buy anything," said Lisa.

"I think it changed from a shop in 1995. When we moved in, the garden was cemented and there were mixed seed sacks in the shed at the end.

"We've kept a lot of the original fixtures and have painted the overhead cupboards in the kitchen.

"We've also kept a store cupboard in the kitchen, painting the doors."

Lisa and her husband Kevin also found two safes in the house which they have kept and used for storage.

"We haven't found anything particularly decorative. We found a box of tiny washers and a few other things but that's it."
