A dog was recused from the canal near Sandbach today following a mishap during his early morning walk.

Firefighters rescued a very wet and grateful Dexter from Wardle Lock canal in Booth Lane, Middlewich at 7 am.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "A dog had fallen into the canal and had to be rescued by firefighters.

"The dog had fallen close to the locks. Crews used reach poles to lift the dog back to safety. The dog is now back with its owner."
