A former British soldier who died fighting alongside the Ukrainian forces against Russia is to be honoured in Sandbach.
Jordan Gatley, a former pupil of Sandbach School, was a casualty in the on-going war by his family as we revealed in this story here .
The former soldier, who grew up in Sandbach, is to have a permanent memorial near the town's War Memorial on The Cobbles.
Sandbach Town Council last night (Wednesday) agreed to support efforts to honour the former soldier, some of whose family still live in Sandbach.
Councillor Nicola Cook said a plaque in memory of Jordan was going to be put on a bench in front of the War Memorial.
"As he wasn't a member of the UK Armed Forces at the time of his death his name can't be added to the War Memorial," she said.
"Instead, a plaque is going to be put on a bench dedicated to Jordan. The plan is to dedicate it on November 11th – the day after Jordan's birthday."
The town council heard that Jordan's mum, Sally Gatley, had written to the town's MP, Fiona Bruce, asking her if a memorial could be put up in the town for her son.
Mrs Gatley said: "When the news of Jordan was released, a book of condolence was opened in the Town Hall and over 300 people attended his funeral.
"I feel there would be local support in Sandbach for a local young man who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"His reasons for going were simply that the Ukraine people needed help and he had trained six years, so why not go?"
Jordan studied at Sandbach School before leaving to attend Reaseheath College in Nantwich to study public services.
A funeral service took place at St Mary's Church, Nantwich in August last year before cremation in Crewe.
