Fresh heatwave prompts renewed RSPCA appeal to help local wildlife

The RSPCA is reminding people to not forget wildlife as another heatwave brings soaring temperatures across Crewe and Nantwich.

The renewed appeal follows a previous bout of hot weather which saw the RSPCA experience its busiest day of the year, on 24 June, with 4,135 calls from members of the public concerned about animals.

And now, amid its Summer of Kindness, the charity is urging the public to do more to help wild animals amid soaring temperatures.

While many pet owners will be focused on keeping their companions safe and comfortable in the heat, the animal welfare charity is encouraging people to spare a thought for wildlife, as many species can struggle to find food, water and shelter during prolonged periods of hot weather.

Wildlife expert for the RSPCA, Rebecca Machin, said: "The last heatwave showed just how quickly extreme temperatures can affect animals, including wildlife.

"The RSPCA experienced its busiest day of the year as thousands of people contacted us with concerns for all kinds of animals.

"With another heatwave now here, we're asking people not to forget about wildlife.

"Many wild animals will be struggling to find water, food and shelter, but there are simple things we can all do to help."

The RSPCA is encouraging people to take a few simple steps to help wildlife during the hot weather:

  • Leave out shallow dishes of fresh water and top them up regularly
  • Create shaded areas in gardens using shrubs, plants or other natural cover
  • Leave suitable food, such as wet cat or dog food, for hedgehogs and badgers
  • Keep dogs under close control around wildlife, especially during the cooler mornings and evenings when many animals are more active
