A Haslington dad was leaving his house for the school run with his two daughters - when a bull 'turned and charged' at him - only just dodging the animal.

Andy Lumb was leaving his Wells Avenue house in Haslington and walking to school with his four and 6-year-old daughters - when a bull 'clattered past on the pavement' right in front of them.

Cheshire Police were alerted to an escaped bull incident on Wells Avenue, Haslington, close to The Dingle Primary School, at around 8:50am on Wednesday 19 April.

Local officers, supported by firearms officers arrived to find a bull in an 'agitated state' - posing a threat to people in the area.

The owner of the bull attempted to secure the animal - but was unable to do so.

Due to the 'real risk' of the bull escaping on to the main road and surrounding housing estates - a decision was made by police to shoot it dead.

After seeing the bull, Mr Lumb managed to get his daughters back in the house.

The Haslington dad 'only just missed' the animal after it 'turned and charged' through a hedge towards him.

Mr Lumb was sad to see the bull killed but saw the 'danger' involved with the incident.

The eye witness told Nub News: "I was just leaving the house in the morning to do the school run on foot with my four and 6-year-old daughters when the bull clattered past on the pavement right in front of us.

"I was just able to get my girls back in the house when the bull turned and charged through the hedge at me and chased me round my car and only just missed me.

"The animal was clearly in distress in an unfamiliar environment and in a state of panic.

"A lot of effort was made to calm and capture the bull before it was shot.

"Please believe this was the last thing I wanted to see or my daughter's to potentially witness either.

"But, if there's any doubt about the danger, just imagine if we'd left 60 seconds sooner and been that much further from our front door.

Cheshire Police said the decision to kill the bull was not 'taken lightly' - but was made to 'protect residents' (Cheshire Police).

"The school is only about a 100 yards from the end of the road also."
