An avid football fan and Sandbach father-of-two is stepping out for charity to raise cash for Alzheimers Research UK.

The Crewe Alex fan has chosen the local derby against Port Vale later this month to walk the 14 miles between both stadiums.

Alastair Lawrence, a facilities supervisor with Roadchef at Sandbach Services on the M6, is walking the perimeter of the Mornflake Stadium in Crewe before heading to Port Vale.

He is leaving Crew Alex and plans to walk along as much of the canal system as he can to reach his destination – the Port Vale stadium, Vale Park in Burslem – by 5 pm or before.

And he has set up a JustGiving page here with donations flooding in.

"I've chosen it as it's the local derby between the two clubs and I'll be watching Crewe play Port Vale.

"I'll be walking from Crewe Alex to the Port Vale stadium in time for the 8 pm kick-off. it's about a seven hour walk."

Alastair has set a £200 target for the walk but hopes he can raise even more money for Alzheimers Research UK (ARUK).

"We had a vote about which charity to choose and this one came top. I'll be wearing my Alzheimers T-shirt," said Alastair who has two children aged three and eight.

"My wife will be cheering me on from home. I'm not a fitness person but I am looking forward to this.

"One of my roles at work is charity work and coming up with ways of raising money for our partners ARUK."
