An investigation has been launched today (Tuesday) after a major fire broke out in the nearby town of Middlewich last night.

Several roads in Middlewich were closed and nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut after a blaze at an industrial unit in the town on one of the hottest nights on record.

Twelve fire engines plus an aerial ladder platform, a Scorpion turret, the environmental protection unit and a high volume pump were called to the blaze on an industrial unit in Brooks Lane just after 8.30 pm.

Firefighters used a high volume pump to take water from the nearby Trent and Mersey canal to tackle the blaze, working through the night.

Brooks Lane remained closed until mid-morning and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service stood down their teams at around 8.45 am.

A spokesperson said: "This has been a challenging incident for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, with a significant number of fire engines and firefighters committed during one of the warmest nights on record.

"However, the fire has been extinguished skilfully and successfully, without spreading to nearby properties. The major incident has now been closed."
