Runner smashes Sandbach 10k setting a new record

By Deborah Bowyer 3rd Aug 2021

Around 200 adult runners took part in the Sandbach 10k from Sandbach Rugby Club which saw not only a crowd of spectators but also records being made.

Winner, Katie Holt from the (City of Stoke AC) not only set a new fastest time for a female but was also the race's first female winner coming in with a time of 33.27.

The race was a new course for 2021 and had waved starts based on entrants estimated finish time to help reduce congestion and reducing the spread of COVID.

The course started and ended in the boundaries of Sandbach Rugby Club, giving an extra opportunity for family and friends to cheer the runners as they did their final lap of the pitches.

But as race director, Martin Gunther explained, it very nearly didn't take place due to COVID.

"The first aid team had to isolate so we very quickly had to find a new first aid team for the event, for which we did but it was very close. I nearly threw the towel in," he joked afterwards.

Martin has thanked all the runners and helpers who made the event such a success. He said: "Thank you to all those who helped fundraise on the day with cake production and consumption.

"Thank you to the rugby club for allowing us to host the event, thanks to the volunteers for the energy, excitement and enthusiasm and finally thank you to the runners who made it what it was and we look forward to hosting you in 2022.

Avid runner, Jo Darlington, a music teacher from Sandbach ran with her team, the South Cheshire Harriers and was hoping to complete the race ion just over an hour.

Another local runner was Helen Nightingale from Elworth who runs with Nantwich Running Club. She started training before lockdown and was also delighted to be taking part.

Money raised from the event will go towards the Patryck Milner Memorial Fund. Seven-year-old Patryck fell ill while at school and was air-lifted to Leighton Hospital in Crewe before being transferred to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool where he tragically passed away.
