Officers are warning residents in Sandbach to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are secure following a recent spate of burglaries..

Over the past few weeks, officers from Congleton Proactive CID have received 12 reports of burglary or suspicious activity across nearby Alsager and are asking residents to make sure their properties are sufficiently secured.

The reports suggest that offenders have been entering the properties through unlocked doors and open windows.

Detective Sergeant George Booth said: "Following the recent spate of burglaries, we are stepping up patrols and ensuring that there is a visible police presence on our streets.

"I would like to reassure residents that we are doing all we can to apprehend those responsible and there are a number of proactive investigative enquiries underway.

"While we continue with our enquiries, I would urge residents to ensure that they review security measures and ensure that their properties are properly secured in order to make it even more difficult for any offenders to strike."

Key advice being issued to homeowners:

• Make sure that all windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.

• Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.

• All external doors should always be secured, even when you are at home.

• Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home.

• Always use a chain if you are unsure of the identity of visitors to your home when answering the door – or similar.

• Where feasible install CCTV.

• It's also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to police.

• Lighting is a good deterrent and is recommended at doors and on garages.

• Consider an accredited burglar alarm system with audible alarm boxes mounted high at the front and rear of your home.

DS Booth continued: "If you see any suspicious activity report it to us so that we can investigate further.

"Any piece of information no matter how big or small could help us catch those responsible and bring them to justice.

"I would urge anyone with information in relation to the recent burglaries to contact Cheshire Police on 101."
