The Sandbach lamppost poppy sponsorship scheme has raised a record total of £780 for the Royal British Legion.

The annual scheme involves individuals, groups and businesses sponsoring a poppy to be place on a lamppost in the town centre to help commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, which was marked yesterday.

Cllr David Jack, who led the scheme, told Sandbach Nub News: "This exceeded last year's grand total of £610 and shows the true depth of feelings towards our fallen service personnel.

Sandbach Town Council has run the scheme with 100 per cent of the funds raised going towards this years' poppy appeal.

Cllr Jack said: "Special thanks go to councillors Steve Kirkham and Laura Crane alongside Wayne McMillian, Katy Pepper, Peter Critton and Robert Lowe who also assisted in making sure the poppy displays were up in time for the remembrance day."

"As lead member on this project it is humbling to see such a great response and support across the town. Hopefully next year we can expand on the scheme even further and add additional features."
