Congleton MP, Fiona Bruce, whose constituency includes Sandbach, has spoken out in Parliament about the genocide of a religious group.
MPs debated and unanimously passed a motion led by Fiona Bruce MP on recognition of genocide by Daesh against Yazidis, Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities.
Fiona Bruce MP said: "The Yazidi population suffered immensely at the hands of Daesh nine years ago and the repercussions are still felt to this day.
"Justice and accountability are key for those whose lives have been devastated. A key part is to determine the extent of the atrocities, which Parliament through my motion recognised in 2016 as genocide, and now the UK Government has followed.
"Whilst justice has been delayed for the survivors of genocide at the hands of Daesh we must do all we can in this 9th anniversary to ensure justice is not denied.
"I am pleased that the UK has made the historic acknowledgement that acts of genocide were committed against the Yazidi people. This must help ensure victims and their families receive the compensation owed to them and are able to access meaningful justice."
The UK decision follows a ruling by the German Federal Court of Justice which found a former Daesh fighter guilty of acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Fiona Bruce champions individual freedoms and human rights, both in this country and abroad, serving on the International Development Select Committee for four years and as well as chairing the Parliamentary sub-committee overseeing the Independent Commission on Aid Inspections.
She sat on the Parliamentary Joint-Committee on Human Rights, which has instigated many reports including into Freedom of Speech in Universities and the need for better care of Prisoners' Children and is Chair of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission (CPHRC).
