Cheshire East has apologised to residents after readers complained about the number of HGVs going along Middlewich Road in Sandbach on their way to work on the Middlewich Bypass project.

Work started on the project, estimated to cost £106.3 million, in the spring and is expected to be completed by 2028.

Construction traffic working on the project is using Middlewich Road in Sandbach after coming off the M6 at Junction 17.

The 1.6-mile bypass will connect Pochin Way in the north of Middlewich to the A533 Booth Lane in the south, including a new bridge over the Sandbach-Northwich railway line and will feature a combined cycleway and footway.

One reader from Elworth who didn't want to be named said: "I am sick and tired of the number of lorries using Middlewich Road to access the Middlewich bypass project. It's getting ridiculous. There's more and more every day."

Councillor Mark Goldsmith, Cheshire East Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "I'd like to apologise to any residents who may have been impacted by the recent increase in construction traffic associated with the Middlewich Eastern Bypass project.

"The A54 Middlewich Road forms one of the routes used to access the Middlewich Eastern Bypass construction site and there has recently been a particularly busy period of construction activity.

"We are working closely with our construction partner to manage vehicle movements and minimise disruption wherever possible.

"This construction traffic is supporting the delivery of a major new 1.6-mile route to the east of Middlewich, including new canal and railway bridges, three new roundabouts and new walking and cycling connections.

"We will continue to monitor construction traffic as work progresses and work with our contractor to minimise its impact on surrounding communities."
