Northbound lanes of the M6 near Sandbach were forced to close this afternoon following a collision between a HGV and van.

Firefighters were called to the scene, between junctions 17 and 18, shortly after 1pm.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews gave care to a 54-year-old man at the scene. A hose reel jet dampened down the engine and the battery has been made safe."

An ambulance was also in attendance, but it is not clear if either drivers were taken away in it.

An update from Highways England at 4:12pm says that all of the lanes have now reopened.
