Ninety-two-year-old Harold Jinks from a care home in Sandbach is encouraging others to share in his passion for knitting - after dedicating over 20 years to knitting for local charities.

Harold's fondness of knitting first began when he was invited to his wife's charity knitting group. He was the only male in the group, but immediately fell in love with the hobby.

He donated his knitted creations to those in need at Leighton Hospital. During his ten years with the group, he donated approximately 10,000 pairs of socks to the rehabilitation ward.

After his wife's sad passing, Harold went on to join another knitting group at Sandbach Baptist Church, and now knits hats and baby clothing for St Luke's Hospice in Winsford.

Despite losing sight in one eye a year ago, Harold's determination to keep knitting never wavered.

With the help of staff at Elworth Grange Care Home in Booth Lane, Sandbach where Harold is a resident, he launched a 'Knit and Natter group'.

Harold said: "I've always been used to doing things with my hands, and knitting is something I can still do despite losing some sight – it keeps my mind and my hands active.

"Being able to provide things like clothing to families and children in need makes me feel very good."

"Knitting is an excellent hobby – not only does it offer a calm and relaxing pastime, thus improving mental health, it also promotes physical dexterity in the hands. (Photo: Elworth Grange Care Home)

Rachel McIntosh, the Home Manager at Elworth Grange, said: "Knitting is an excellent hobby – not only does it offer a calm and relaxing pastime, thus improving mental health, it also promotes physical dexterity in the hands.

"We're inspired by Harold and the generosity he's shown over the years, using his hobby to help others and never letting anything get in his way. We hope our new Knit and Natter group will give others as much joy as it does Harold!"

You can join Elworth Grange's Knit and Natter group with Harold every Thursday from 2.30 pm in the home, where refreshments are also provided.
