A Sandbach woman is gearing up for a 60 mile challenge next month (March) to help young cancer sufferers.

Gill Turnock is taking part in 'Walk 60 Miles in March' for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The grandmother, who some people may recognise from her volunteering work with the Repair Cafe Sandbach, will be walking most days as part of the 60 mile challenge.

It's a charity and subject close to Gill's heart as her granddaughter has been having treatment for cancer in her back.

Gill said: "Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words 'you have cancer'. They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through it.

"Teenage Cancer Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to meeting this vital need so no young person faces cancer alone.

"Some of you may know my granddaughter has been having treatment for cancer in her back. She has had two major operations, chemotherapy and is now having six weeks of Proton Beam Therapy.

"Luckily she is nearing the end of her treatment and the tumour has gone. She has been amazing while going through the treatment.

"She hasn't needed a lot of help but I wanted to support Teenage Cancer Trust for teens and young adults who do."

Gill, who has set up a JustGiving page for donations added: "Every £25 donation provides an hour to talk. A Youth Support Coordinator provides the extra help young people need with things like studies, relationships and mental wellbeing throughout cancer treatment.

"£25 could pay for an hour of their time, helping them be there when they're needed most. Any amount will contribute to helping for teens and young adults."

Gill is a familiar face with the Repair Cafe Sandbach whose monthly cafe is this Saturday (21 February) at St Peter's Church hall in Elworth from from 11 am until 2 pm.
