Motorists faced short-term mayhem today (Thursday) for long-term gain as a week-long road resurfacing project continued on a main road through the town.

Middlewich Road, one of the main roads going in and out of the town, is being resurfaced and diversions during school hours each day are in place.

The work means motorists from Elworth, Ettiley Heath and Middlewich are having to do a big loop to get in and out of the town centre between these times.

The diversion takes traffic down Hind Heath Road on to Crewe Road to get into Sandbach and traffic was backed up past Sandbach Cricket Club earlier today.

Councillor Nicola Cook, Cheshire East's Elworth councillor, who secured funding for the project, has thanked motorists for their patience and understanding while the work is being done.

She said: "It was also brilliant to see so many residents saying thank you to the team, offering refreshments and just being interested in what was happening.

"It is quite clear, that whilst the disruption is tricky, all of us that use Middlewich Road, or live near it, are really welcoming the repairs."

She added: "The team have gone out of their way to sort out a few other issues. The drains are being cleared, loose utility covers are being reported, a large sink hole has been discovered and being fixed.

"They have even cut down a tree which was completely rotten and was hollow at the base on Platt Avenue which was a risk to residents.

"We really do have a great team working on this project, and what they are doing is going to make a difference to all of us who use or live on Middlewich Road."
