Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan, has pushed the Prime Minister on getting a rebuild of Leighton Hospital - an issue he has campaigned on since becoming elected.

Dr Kieran Mullan asked at Prime Minister's Questions to look closely at the plans published by Leighton and supported by thousands of residents in the South of Cheshire.

He said: "I know that Leighton Hospital has been allocated more than £44 million to address some of the immediate issues at that site.

"I also know that my hon. friend is keen to ensure continued investment in his local hospital.

"The Department for Health and Social Care is looking at more hospitals to join the new hospital programme, and I am sure that it will have heard what he said and, indeed, the voices of his constituents, too."

The MP also addressed recent pressure on the NHS during his question, welcoming the plan to have an independently verified workforce plan.

"At this week's Prime Minister's Questions, I once again pushed the PM on my campaign to get a rebuild of Leighton Hospital.

"Leighton Hospital has benefited from several significant investments, such as new theatres and other facilities; however, they can only take us so far.

"The hospital needs a fundamental rebuild to better meet the needs of our growing and ageing local population.

"I also understand that the NHS is under pressure and things are difficult.

"Despite record numbers of staff, demand is up even more.

"That is why the agreement that the NHS will, for the first time, get an independently verified workforce plan is so important.

"An ageing population means more demand. I know people want to be paid more, but I think we should keep the ongoing extra spending to remain focused on continuing to expand the workforce.

"We have more than 10,000 more nurses than a year ago and are on course to meet the 50,000 pledges. Increased and them not being evenly spread means staff don't feel the reduced pressure on them."
