A group of musicians from Sandbach have performed on one of the world's great stages – the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The Love Music Trust Percussion Ensemble were in invited to perform in London as part of the Music for Youth Proms 2022.

The musicians were invited to perform in London after taking part in the regional heat in Northampton and then the Symphony Hall in Birmingham as part of the Music for Youth.

The ensemble, who rehearse at Sandbach School, is made up of musicians aged 11 – 18 from local schools.

Musical director, Mark Concar, said they should be proud of their performance.

"This is just about the highest accolade you can get. I never thought my group would get to play at the Royal Albert Hall.

"They are a talented group and they did exceptionally well. We are so proud of them."

As part of the concert, the young musicians performed two pieces – the first a reflective piece of music by Blake Tyson called 'Not Far From Here' followed by the main work for the concert titled 'Sahara'.

This piece was commissioned by the Love Music Trust in 2017 for the Percussion Ensemble to play at the World Music Festival in Kerkrade, Holland, where they were awarded a gold medal for the performance.

Sahara is written for a vast array of percussion instruments from marimbas, vibraphones and glockenspiels to timpani, drum kit, Egyptian tabla and waterphone.

Throughout the concert there were also creative slots where 500 young musicians were taught a new commission in sections, culminating in a show stopping finale of the piece featuring pyrotechnics and confetti cannons.
