A mysterious "humming" noise is driving some Sandbach residents spare with no idea where it is coming from.

Nichola Friel, a Cooksmere Lane resident, raised the issue on social media and found that others have had similar experiences with the humming across the town and further afield.

She says the irritating noise has been heard for "many months" and has even led to disputes among neighbours.

Nichola told Sandbach Nub News: "I have two neighbours that don't talk anymore because the one neighbour, two doors down from me, said my neighbour next to me is running her tumble dryer and washing machine at all hours of the morning.

"They had Cheshire East Council around here to monitor the noise and she put her machine on and they basically said, 'it's not that bad and there's nothing you can do about it'".

Nichola is convinced the issue is more widespread than a neighbourly dispute as people from other parts of the town, including the Ettiley Heath and Elworth areas, share that they can hear the mystery sound.

Residents of a nearby village have set up a Facebook group dedicated to investigating the source of the so-called 'Haslington Hum'.

Several theories on the source of the sound have been posited on Nichola's post, including the M6 motorway, but she has dismissed this as it is quite constant and "they're not working on the motorway".

Some have suggested it comes from the local electric lines or substations while others believe it could be a more global phenomenon linked with the Earth's electromagnetic field.

There have been similar reports from all over the world of mysterious humming noises, including areas of North America, Bristol and Auckland, New Zealand.

Investigations into the source of those noises have remained largely inconclusive throughout the years.

Nichola said: "The noise is constant. When you sit inside, you can hear it inside and one night it was so loud, I thought it was coming from the other room. Some days it can just really get you down."

"How can a noise just start, and nobody has any idea where it has come from?" she added.
