Sandbach's famous tunnel history has a new meaning.

A heap of sand and a temple dating back thousands of years have been uncovered in Sandbach.

The stunning discovery was made this morning (April 1) by archaelogist, George Venuti and Sandbach Nub News editor, Deborah Bowyer, dashed out to see it.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," he said.

"I've found Roman ruins, Viking weaponry and fossils dating back millions of years but nothing compares to this!

"We knew there were hidden tunnels in Sandbach but we never knew they would lead to a temple. I'm hoping this bit of history will put our historical town on the map."

Known as Sanbec in 1086, and Sondbache in 1260, Sandbach's name comes from the Anglo-Saxon sand bæce, which can mean sand stream or sand valley.

Sandbach Tunnel Network reported tunnel from Dingle Farm to St Mary's Church, farmland to search for hidden chests or a potential tomb of King Peada and monastery foundations off Crewe Road to search for a reported tunnel from abbeyfields to the monastery.

However, this discovery has thrown that understanding out of the window.

Local historian April Foley said: "This changes everything!"

The location of the sand valley and temple are not being disclosed, with April and her team due to a complete a comprehensive survey of the area.

She added: "We need to figure out how this all fits into Sandbach's history.

"Early indications suggests the town is much older than we previously thought!"

If you've read this far then firstly, sorry. Secondly, I'm sure you've worked it out already but this is an April Fools! I'm afraid there's no sand valley or temple ... that we know of but Sandbach Tunnel Network is going strong.
