A Sandbach dentist has welcomed the news that dentists who set up practices in areas of England with poor access to the NHS will be offered a bonus.

But he fears the move may just be like "placing a temporary filling on a single tooth in a situation where the whole mouth needs fixing".

The government has announced a £20,000 bonus as well as higher payments for dentists who take on new patients and teeth-cleaning in schools in a bid to improve care.

But Mehdi Yazdi, who took over the award-winning Crown Bank Dental practice in 2017 and whose wife Janine is a partner, fears more work needs to be done.

"The limitations and challenges are well-documented and anything done with the intention of improving this is welcome," he said.

"However, unfortunately the measures that have been announced fall very much short of addressing the problems that exist."

Mr Yazdi says that during the last 20 years, dentistry budgets have "eroded" year on year through inflation and other issues.

He said: "There needs to be honesty about what direction NHS dentistry is going in and if money is short, then it should be targeted in the most effective way.

"It's really sad to that the leading cause of hospital admissions in children is tooth decay."

Mr Yazdi said the money released by the government "should be targeted at prevention" and allow children to have access to a dentist.

Crown Bank Dental in Crown Bank has an experienced team offering NHS dental care for children. Its dental nurses visit local schools and private nurseries to deliver sessions on oral health and tooth care to little ones.

The practice was heavily recognised in the Private Dentistry Awards where it was highly commended for the team of the year and finalists in Practice Manager of the year – Emma Baskeyfield, Practice Principal of the year – Mehdi Yazdi and Dental Practice of the year – Crown Bank Dental.
