Parish Council writes to local MP and urges residents to sign petition about Jodrell Bank's future

Holmes Chapel Parish Council has written to Congleton MP, Sarah Russell, expressing its deep concern about the proposed withdrawal of funding for the e-MERLIN radio astronomy at Jodrell Bank.
And the parish council is urging residents to sign a petition here to reverse the decision to cut funding to Jodrell Bank and "save this important, historic scientific site that still carries out important work".
Holmes Chapel Parish Council says in its letter to Sarah Russell MP: "For more than 80 years, Jodrell Bank has formed part of the landscape and identity of our local community.
"The iconic Lovell Telescope is not only recognised around the world as a symbol of British scientific achievement but is also an enduring landmark for residents across Cheshire.
"Generations have grown up with the telescope as part of their daily lives, inspiring curiosity, innovation and pride in our local area.
"As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and internationally renowned centre for scientific research, Jodrell Bank makes an invaluable contribution to astronomy, education, tourism and the local economy.
"Holmes Chapel Parish Council wishes to record our strong support for all efforts being made to secure a sustainable funding solution.
"We urge the Government, UK Research and Innovation, and all those involved to work collaboratively to ensure that the scientific research undertaken at Jodrell Bank, together with the future of the Lovell Telescope and the e-MERLIN facility, is protected for generations to come.
"We are grateful for the work that you are undertaking to highlight this issue and to advocate for the future of Jodrell Bank. Holmes Chapel Parish Council is pleased to add its voice in support of this campaign."
"We would also encourage residents to support Jodrell Bank. There is a petition currently underway that you can sign by clicking the following link: https://c.org/bkZxZnJQdg".
The "Help Save Jodrell Bank" change.org petition here has already received 5,072 signatures with more still rolling in.
The petition states: "Jodrell Bank funding was cut to the tune of £2.8 million. The observatory and its network of telescopes have been pivotal to the country's study of distant galaxies and training future astronomers.
"Scientists have described the decision as "heartbreaking" and "scientifically misguided". This cut not only affects the employees but thousands of scientists who depend on the site and the thousands of visitors each year who visit. At 70 years old it must be preserved for the future."
