A boat traveller had to be rescued by firefighters after his ankle got trapped in the hydraulic mechanism of a canal boat.

One fire engine from Crewe, another from Alsager and one from Winsford along with the major rescue unit off went to Maltkins Bank yesterday (Thursday) at 9.35 am.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Firefighters worked to release a casualty whose ankle was trapped in the hydraulic mechanism of a canal boat.

"The crews formulated a plan to release the casualty, utilising a water safety pack as they were close to the water's edge.

"Once released, the casualty was handed into the care of the ambulance service and taken to hospital."
