Police in Sandbach have praised a good Samaritan for showing "community spirit" by going out of his way to return a lost purse to its owner.

Writing on the Sandbach Elworth & Brereton Rural Police Facebook page on Monday, an officer said a man had found a woman's purse which contained "numerous bank cards, store cards and cash".

The post said: "There was also a driving licence card in the purse so he drove to that address (which wasn't in Sandbach) to return the item to its owner. However, the house was no longer occupied."

After attempting to find the owner again, the man then brought the purse to Sandbach police station to hand it over to the officers.

"As he was providing the officers with his details, the owner of the purse turned up. She had been notified by her former neighbour that this male had been looking for her to return her purse," the post said.

Police described the woman as being "very grateful" for the unnamed man's good deed.

The officer concluded the post by saying: "Restores your faith in mankind. Thank you."
