A Sandbach road had to be gritted yesterday (Thursday) morning after a van caught fire.

Firefighters from Congleton fire station went to a van on fire in Birch Gardens, Sandbach at 9.45 am.

A Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters in breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.

"They asked for Cheshire Highways to attend to grit the road, due to the amount of water on the road that was beginning to freeze."
