An historic 1950s railway sign is to be returned to its rightful place – thanks a group of volunteers and the skills of local businesses.

Sandbach train station will have an original 70 year old sign on Platform 2 close to where it originally stood.

The project has been masterminded by the Friends of Sandbach Station, a group of volunteers set up to make the station a more welcoming and passenger-friendly place.

An Alsager blacksmith was drafted in to restore the 10ft by two ft original sign working on bits which had eroded and make a frame.

John Scarrott, chair of Friends of Sandbach Station is excited about the installation which takes place next week.

He said: "We're delighted that it's finally going to make it on to the platform and be displayed.

"We're so grateful for all those who have helped or donated towards the project. The sign will be installed on Platform 2 close to where it originally stood.

"This has all been made possible thanks to help and contributions from the local communities around Sandbach and Alsager."

Sandbach Town Council donated a grant for the project and sign is being installed by Sandbach company DSL.

"We are very grateful to Sandbach Town Council without which the installation would not be possible," said Mr Scarrott.

"A small contribution to the works has been made by FOSS. We would also wish to thank Network Rail and Northern ."

The sign frame and design was skilfully constructed by Alsager blacksmith, Andrea Hughes of Andrea's Anvil.

"The outside was quite corroded so had to be sandwiched between two metal frames," said Andrea.

Andrea, whose blacksmith business is based at Hall Farm in Alsager, made a frame for the posts and weatherproofed it so it will last for future generations to see.

She added: "It's such a lovely sign and I am really pleased with how it has turned out."
