With No Smoking Day just around the corner next Wednesday (March 13th), Cheshire East Council is encouraging residents to make the best possible choice for their health and to use the day as a great opportunity to quit smoking for good.

Now in its 40th year, No Smoking Day is a national campaign that encourages smokers to take a 24-hour break from cigarettes, highlighting the numerous benefits of quitting smoking, even for a short period.

Quitting smoking, even for one day, can significantly improve your health, including:

  • Increased lung function
  • Improved circulation
  • Boosted immune system
  • Enhanced sense of taste and smell

There are more than 5.3 million adults in England who still smoke, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death in England. In fact, up to two in three smokers will die as a result of long-term smoking.

Dr Matt Tyrer, director of public health at Cheshire East Council, said: "Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the UK, and it's important to remember that the benefits of quitting smoking start immediately.

"No matter how long you've smoked, quitting can significantly improve your health and well-being."

There are a variety of free resources and support to help Cheshire East residents quit smoking, including:

  • NHS Smokefree helpline: Search for 'Smokefree' or call NHS 111
  • Local stop smoking services via One You Cheshire East at: Be Smoke Free | One You Cheshire East or call their stop smoking helpline on 0808 1643 202.
  • E-cigarettes: While not risk-free, e-cigarettes can be a helpful tool for some people trying to quit smoking. Talk to your doctor or a smoking cessation advisor about whether e-cigarettes are right for you.

This No Smoking Day, take the first step towards a healthier life and quit smoking. By taking advantage of the free proven resources and support available, you can successfully quit smoking and improve your overall health and well-being.
