Sandbach Day of Dance takes place this weekend and organisers are hoping it will be bigger and better than ever before.

Sandbach Town Council voted to withdraw the funding of £3,000 for this year's event and the one the following year after some councillors alleged the 'grey faces caused racial offence to some parts of the community'.

Soon afterwards, a Crowdfunding appeal was launched here which has raised £1,375 and now this year's event is to be held on Saturday (30 May).

There are 13 sides taking place with seven dance spots across the town and around 200 dancers and musicians coming to the town to take part in what organisers say is "a colourful, inclusive, family friendly, free event".

And there will be plenty to entertain visitors, including Bolton based 'Leap To Your Feet Appalachian Dancers and Soyaband'.

They will be performing the traditional dance and music of the Southern appalachian mountains of America known as "Appalachian Clogging", with dancers wearing tap shoes.

And children have a chance to enjoy the fun of Morris dancing a free children's colouring sheet from Sandbach Library with prizes for the winner and runner-up in two age categories.

Sandbach Day of Dance say on their Crowdfunding page: "Sandbach Day of Dance includes Border Morris, Clog Step, Cotswold Morris, Longsword, Molly, Mumming, North West Morris, Rapper Sword dancing. The event spans a weekend with the main dancing taking place on the Saturday.

"It aims to celebrate and showcase the widest variety of Morris and traditional dance forms from around the country.

"The event is a free, public festival held in Sandbach's Market Square and town centre. The Sandbach Day of Dance is apolitical, religiously unaffiliated and welcomes all."
