Sandbach residents are sharing fond memories of the Queen following the sad news that she died at Balmoral this afternoon.

Sandbach town councillor and local resident, Nicola Cook, was fortunate enough to attend the 100th anniversary service of the Royal British Legion at Westminster Abbey in October.

Cllr Cook, who represents the Elworth ward, is assistant director of regional operations at the Royal British Legion.

Cllr Cook told Sandbach Nub News: "It was a truly humbling event hearing about how the work of the Legion affects and improves the lives of veterans which we support through the teams I manage."

Elworth Grange in James Brindley Drive, Sandbach received a royal message from the Queen in March this year for the 100 birthday of Kathleen Wood..

Kathleen enjoyed a fun-filled day of celebrations along with her family, her friends and the care team at Elworth Grange and pride of place was her birthday card from the Queen.

The 100-year-old was born in Cardiff in 1922. She was a secretary for the civil service during the war and also took on air raid duties.

Elsewhere in Sandbach there are constant reminders of the Queen and the important part she played in the town.

During the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in May, hair salon Franceso proudly displayed the Queen's face on their window.

In Sandbach Park, there is a constant reminder of Queen Elizabeth II. A special stone flower monument sits pride of place.

The beautiful display says: "To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, 2nd June 2012."

Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, who is coming to Sandbach in October has issued a statement.

"I wish to pass on my deepest condolences to the Royal Family on this immensely sad day. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years as a pillar of strength and wisdom to our nation and her legacy will be felt deeply for the next 70 years and more," he said.

"Her Majesty was the one constant that remained in our nation's public life. She will forever be a shining example of public service and a figurehead for the values that unite us as a country, and I join people across Cheshire and the United Kingdom in mourning her loss."
