A Sandbach man has cycled an amazing 4,059 miles across America starting at San Francisco in the West ending up at New York on the East coast.

Steve Nixon from Wheelock cycled for 60 days across America eventually arriving home in time for his son's stag party.

The maths tutor, who served in the Cheshire Regiment, spent 20 years in the Army and is used to planning routes and ensuring everything works like clockwork.

And despite having a Garmin stolen, having mechanical issues with his bike due to potholes and losing a tooth in the process, he's back home in one piece already preparing his next challenge.

Wife Anne was pleased to see him walk through the door after his epic journey which saw him flying off from Heathrow on 11 June and landing back in the UK on 18 August.

Steve kept Anne, a nurse in a neonatal unit, informed of his daily progress which saw him camping as well as staying in motels.

"I carried everything in my paniers. It doesn't seem real to be back. It was just one of the things I'd always wanted to do.

"It's been something on my mind since I took my children to Florida. Originally I was going to do it on my motorbike but I don't have one any more.

"I did have punctures and all kinds of things happen during the trip but that's life. I went on Route 50 which is one of the loneliest roads in Nevada and Utah."

Steve said he planned for his journey but change a few things as he went along. "Nothing quite prepares you for this because anything can go wrong. Everything is out of your control really."

Now back home, Steve is looking forward to getting a replacement tooth and getting ready for his son't wedding.

"I walked into my son's stag do and he couldn't quite believe I was home," said Steve who is no stranger to endurance challenges.

He has completed a six marathon challenge which fewer than 20,000 people have done and is now gearing up for his next challenge.
