The MP for Sandbach has welcomed the news that Cheshire East will be given £880,000 to support vulnerable children and families this Winter.

The money will be used to support families in financial difficulty to provide food and other essentials over the Christmas period.

Fiona Bruce MP said: "It is important, now more than ever, that families continue to be supported and this additional funding will help to do just that, enabling Councils to deliver well targeted support as quickly as possible to those who really need it."

The money is part of the government's £170m Covid winter grant scheme, provided in response to footballer Marcus Rashford's campaign to extend free school meals and end child hunger in the UK.

Mrs Bruce voted against a Labour bid in October to extend the meals, but she did call for the government to extend a holiday food program for vulnerable children.

The announced funding will primarily focus on helping with heating and eating for disadvantaged families with children, helping them to buy essentials with at least 80% of the funds to be spent on food, energy and water bills and 20% for other essential costs.
